Five questions worth asking yourself about your gambling

  • Am I spending more time or money than I meant to?
  • Do I feel a strong urge to win back losses?
  • Do I lose track of time or money while playing?
  • Do I hide or play down how much I gamble?
  • Is gambling starting to affect my sleep, school, work, money, or relationships?

Catching this stuff early makes it easier to course-correct and keep yourself safe.

Online gambling is not underground anymore

$82.7 B

Last year, people in Ontario bet $82.7 billion on legal gambling sites, mostly sports betting and online casinos.

31%

That’s a 31% jump in just one year. Online gambling is built to be fast, immersive, and always on, with fewer natural breaks than in a real casino.

It’s all over sports, social feeds, and group chats. Gambling access doesn’t stop, and it is not always easy to remember to pause or check how much you’ve spent. You can bet anytime, anywhere. The line between entertainment and harm can move fast without you noticing.

Why gambling feels like a skill game (and why that’s by design)

Gambling can feel predictable, even when it isn’t. That’s partly because of something called the illusion of control. It’s a mental shortcut where we start to believe our knowledge of the game can influence outcomes that are mostly based on chance.

This mindset shows up a lot in sports betting. Knowing a team well, betting on a favourite player, changing bets mid-game, or timing decisions can feel strategic. These actions can boost confidence but they don’t actually change the odds or improve your chance to win.

Online gambling can make this sense of control grow. Features like live betting, cash-out options, early wins, and near wins can make it seem like you’re learning patterns or improving your strategy.
